OLIVIA
OLIVIA
Another windowsill sculpture
Place OLIVIA on a windowsill or anywhere that receives direct sunlight and see the typography project onto the surface. Move, rotate, and adjust placement to see how it changes. Cool.
Advanced Level Play
With a pen, paper, and a few pins (all not included), OLIVIA can also track the location of the sun in the sky at a chosen time of day. If you track this shifting location for an entire year, the result will be a figure 8 shape, called an “Analemma.”
How to make an Analemma with OLIVIA:
Choose a location and precise time of day to track the sun.
Between 9 am and 11 am and 2 pm and 5 pm are likely best.
Choose a time that is convenient in your life.Use pins to attach a piece of thick paper or card stock to the surface.
It is important that the paper does not move once tracking has begun.Place a small drop of glue at two points where OLIVIA meets the paper.
It is important that OLIVIA does not move once tracking has begun. When it is sunny at the exact tracking time you chose, make a dot with a pen on the paper in the center of the “O.” If it is cloudy, do not add a dot.
Tip: Set an alarm a few minutes before tracking time.Keep on trackin’ for 365 days.
Remember to adjust your timing when you enter and exit daylight savings time. After a year, you will have tracked the sun’s full path! Your analemma shape will depend on where you live on the Earth, where you position OLIVIA, and what time of day you track.
Move OLIVIA somewhere else and repeat process.
